How much Diatomaceous Earth to use/buy?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm planning a shopping trip for my chickens  and know I want some Diatomaceous Earth. I see it is sold in 100 gramme or 1 kg packages . I have 2 chickens. If I use it in their dust bath and maybe a little in their feed how long would one last me? How much do you use at a time for dust bath and in with feed?

I'm trying to work out what to buy. Thanks.

You wouldnt need more than a spoonful in the food so I guess it depends on how liberal you want to be in the dustbath. I do use quite a bit  and also spread some on the ends of the roosting bars so it might be worth you getting the bigger size (it doesnt go off).

I did buy a 10 kilo tub - over a year ago and about a third left

I'm trying to keep tabs on how much I'm spending on "just" two chickens.

It's probably best not to think about it! I guess it's all the initial outlay and it will tail off.......please tell me that's correct....!

Eerrr...... Nope......

Over the last year I've been on this forum and seen various products and thought .... "oooohhh I just might get some of that to try". Just last month I bought bokashi bran and live white maggots for the first time. 'Tis all good fun though :D

Sorry, edited to say on a serious note, the initial outlay of eglu, run and fencing were the only expensive items. Apart from layers pellets and Auboise which I always buy, the rest are just nice to have things and come in big tubs and bottles so seem to last ages. Sorry, didn't mean to alarm anyone into thinking it is a constant outlay.
