Tinkerbell
Hi Have had my three girls for just over a week and Gwen now seems to be a bit under the weather. Her comb is droopy - not bright red - and she's not eating so much. She is standing around almost falling asleep standing up, no where near as lively as when she first arrived. Any ideas as to what might be wrong? Vet appointment has been booked for the morning.
Scottie
One of our hens, Sylvia who we've had for 3 years was a bit like that last week - no energy, closed eyes, happy to sit on my kneee for half an hour, standing all bunched up etc. Took her to the vet last week who said she was "really quite poorly" but didn't know why. Anyway, the vet gave her Baytril to be taken orally by a syringe and for the first three days I couldn't see any change in her - her comb seemed to get even paler. This morning she was a bit livelier and by this evening, on our return visit to the vet, she was eating and her comb is brighter and generally a much happier chicken. This evening, we were given a probiotic powder to give her over the next five days to counteract any side effects of the antibiotics. By the way, we were told that you can't eat any of her eggs for 21 days after she finishes the antibiotics (not that she's laying at the moment anyway). Hope you get on okay at the vet. Tinkerbell
We took Gwen to the vets and they werent sure what was wrong with her, some sort of infection so they gave her a course of Baytril, unfortunately she didnt improve, we took her back to the vets yesterday and sadly the vet said it was best that she was put down as she was not responding to any of the tretment and she was very poorly. I feel really bad as we have only had the chooks for 3 weeks and I keep thinking what did I do wrong, Gwen was so lively and looked really healthy when we first got her but within a week she was ill, the other two are fine. Could it of been something that she had eaten from our garden ?
Ain't Nobody Here
I've already posted on your Dangerous plants post to say I was so sorry to hear about Gwen. I believe that chickens generally avoid plants that are dangerous to them so I don't think it can be anything she ate. Unfortunately, they just sometimes seem to succumb to illness and can't be saved. It's nothing you've done.
Cazjohn
Really sorry about Gwen its incredible how quickly you become attached to them Chickens mask illness really well and generally don't show symptoms until they are really ill so you took the best course of action. x
