Kepeing indoor Pigs outside

Recommended Posts

Hi, we're looking after some GP's but it seems to have become a permanent thing, however, we're renting and can't keep pets so am looking to rehome them.

They are both kept indoors, but my boss who's interested in having them has asked if they can be kept outdoors once they've been indoor pigs.

Is it damaging to put them outside once they're used to living inside? I know when I was a kid friend's at school always kept there's outside rather than inside.

Thanks

Helen

How old are the pigs?

I think the general thought is that, if they are put outside during the warmer months, they should be fine, as they will gradually get used to the colder weather when the season changes... You're not supposed to move them out when it's cold, as that'd be too much of a shock for them. As long as they are given plenty of bedding and a good, reasonably draught-proof house, they should be fine being moved out at this time of year.

My guineas started off inside, but they are now outside in their cage inside the chicken run. It was winter when we started putting them outside - we made sure there was plenty of bedding etc and covered them over at night with a couple of blankets. They are kept dry as they are inside a covered run.

They are perfectly fine - in fact it's much better as I just open the cage and they have a lovely big area in which to run around in during the day.

Guinea pigs will be fine outside the vast majority of the year. I would bring them in for the night (even if its just in a big cardboard box) when its going to be really cold at night. Guinea pigs are not as hardy as rabbits.
