was just watching some re runs of 'The Good Life' on uktvgold and it got me thinking about bartering. We've given eggs to a lot of people who do nice things for us and done swaps for allotment produce etc and I wondered if we could start something on the forum for bartering?

 

I know there is a 'free to a good home' section but it would be nice if we could have a swapsies/exchange section.

 

You could post what you'd like to offer/swap and wait for offers.

 

Just an idea and I know the mods decision is final but I just thought it was a good idea.

 

So, what do you think to the idea and would it be feasible?

Can't see any real advantage over the "Free to a Good Home" and "I've got a Good Home - Wanted" sections tbh.

 

At least with those there is a chance that the BHWT might get a donation.

for example, I have several back issues of Practical Poultry that I'd like to swap for some back issues of Home Farmer or Country Kitchen if anyone's interested?

 

Is it okay to do that in the nesting box?

I'm not against bartering in principle, but I agree with Egluntine - why not just put them in the 'Free to a Good Home' section, and then post a 'Wanted' ad for the Home Farmer magazines.

 

As soon as you start 'trading' things, there is the potential for disputes over condition, size, quality etc, not to mention who is paying the postage ... just sounds too complicated for me.

Personally I'm not sure how well it would work though on a forum like this, given the fact that we are all over the country so it's not such an easy process, and I'm inclined to agree with Olly and Egluntine. But I will definitely make sure that it's considered by the moderating team as a whole.

 

My worry would be that I don't want to end up moderating disputes between dissatisfied barterers, also thinking back to the Crocs Exchange scheme that we set up ages ago..........it simply never took off as there was too little interest.

I think Olly's idea would probably be the best way to go about things though as we've already got the sections necessary in place and as Egluntine mentions, the BHWT may end up with a donation as a result which is always good, isn't it .

I think it will limit options TBH. The person wanting to take one item is reasonably unlikely to have the item wanted by the other individual.

 

I also agree with Afamily that any disputes could be tricky, and the mods and admin have enough to do without being expected to sort this sort of thing out.

 

I feel it has the potential for disaster.

 

The system already in place is not broken, in fact it works well, and the BHWT benefits...so why fix it.?

I think some people have advertised swaps in the wanted and for sale sections and that seems to have worked well. (speaking as one who has done a swap that way).

 

I think if someone puts something up for swap OR for sale it gives them 2 chances at getting rid of the unwanted item rather than having it sitting there if no-one has the thing they want.

 

Any bartering should then be done via the pm system and moderators need have nothing to do with it.

Sounds like a plan, Poet. Tina's idea of posting for sale or swap covers all bases and you would stand a very good chance of getting what you're after .
