Ammonia smell in coop-first time owner

Morning

 

We're getting our chickens and cube next Tuesday.........cant wait!! We're not sure what we should put on the floor and in the poo tray!! I was told not to use saw dust. When we were at Christians hen party he used some wood stuff but cant remember what it was called.....any ideas??

I think Christian uses Aubiose which is similar to hemcore. Horsey type bedding that comes in bales from farm supplies/horse supply shops.

I think Christian uses either aubiose or hemcore. It looks like sawdust - you get it from horsey shops.

Thanks for that, I would of never remembered 'Aubiose'!! Just got to get some of that, some grit and sort out a dust bath then i'm all ready!!

Auboise is good stuff, we use it for the guinea pigs. But for the hens, I think Hemcore is better as it has citronella in it, so helps keep flies at bay and keeps chooks run smelling nice and fresh and lemony. Both are really similar in apparence and price.

My chooks smell nice and clean with the Aubiose.

 

The Aubiose is finer, and much less likely to cause reactions on the hen keepers hands.

 

I'm not sure if it is the co"Ooops, word censored!"ness of the Hemcore or the citronella, but a few Omleteers have reported the problem.
