Gallina
I have been looking at the Wikipedia page on Orpington hens, and the photograph shown there is the image of my black Cochin. The URL of the Wikipedia "Black Orpington" is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Orpington_chicken_2.jpg (not possible to link to it) and here is my Black Cochin: Do you think that Wikipedia have the wrong picture? If theirs is an Orpington, where are her long bare legs?
mrsm_jones
Hahahahahaha!!!! Is the SPITTING IMAGE of my 2 buff Orps!!! I posted about this before ie are mine orps or cochins cos they were sold to me as orps but they have feathered feet. What a mess. Incidently.....those 2 buff "Orps"/cochins STILL have not layed any eggs and we are now 4 MONTHS on from when I bought them at POL!!! Gallina
Cochins take a whole year to grow to full size, so they do not lay eggs as early as other hens. I have had my new Cochin (a Buff Cochin) for eight weeks today, and she still looks like a chick, so I don't think that there is any hope of eggs for a long time yet. The Buff Orpington, Cobar, and Silver-laced Wyandotte who were delivered with my Buff Cochin are all laying daily, but the eggs are still very small. mrsm_jones
Ok, thanks Gallina, will stop fretting now It's just that my fake-Orps are as big as my real one! And the real one is laying! No combs yet on the fake ones though. I'll just have to keep waiting .....
The Dogmother
Your girl is gorgeous Gallina You're quite right about the difference between the two breeds and the wiki photo doesn't show the legs of the 'orp', but because of their extravagant 'fluff' it's sometimes hard to see their legs at all. I have been looking to see if I have any photos of my friend's orpingtons, but can't find any here, but if you look at this link though http://www.kitchen-garden-hens.co.uk/cardsnew.htm, you will see pictures of Francine Raymond's famous orpington girls, and their legs aren't that easy to see in some photos. We visitied them at Easter and their legs aren't always visible when they're on the move either, but definitely NOT feathered.
Daphne
The wiki photo looks like our black orp did when she was younger, the tail was not as full as it is now aged 2. But if you photographed ours from certain/many angles you wouldn't see any leg, particularly not on grass, and you'll never see much; too much fluff. BTW Your girl looks lovely
mrsm_jones
Yes, your lady is certainly a beauty! On the Wiki phot, you can just catch a glimps of black leg, even though it is a rather blurry photo! This has convinced me that I have 1 Orp and 2 cochins! Not that I am bothered.
