Here is the reply to my letter to my local County Councillor. She thanked me for bringing this very important issue to her attention and forwarded this reply from the Head of Staffordshire County Councils catering service:

 

"You'll be pleased to know that we are introducing free range eggs from

local farms where possible as of the beginning of this month. Naturally

there is a cost implication, but we hope to absorb this within our

pricing structure.

 

As mentioned by Bev, this supports national objectives in banning the

use of eggs from caged hens in advance of the 2012 deadline.

 

There will be a press release during February, along with one this week

re: organic meatballs....see below

 

You may also be interested to know that we also purchase our milk from a

local Stafford farm and have introduced organic meatballs onto our

primary and middle menus, supplied by Lower Hurst Farm in Derbyshire and

sourced from Staffordshire organic farms. This again is an extremely

expensive product."

 

One small step for chickenkind .... :D
