 Thank you, Sue. Just as you meant tp type universe..I meant to types horSes...

I know one cannot control everything. I guess a shrink wd say that I was exhausted by the responsibility I have feel for everything....the helplessness of those dear girls and the violence of their death was just the last straw.

Perhaps not the last straw, but waking a sadder but a wiser person. You began as a wise person, of course, otherwise you would not have chosen the path you took, but you have gained in experience.

I have a very small garden (17' x 35') with the kitchen a step away and I do step into the kitchen momentarily when my hens are scratching around to grab treats, water, pellets, but what happened to you could easily happen to me.

Please note all the support expressed here! Big hugs!

So sorry to hear this, but the fox-chicken problem is one of the oldest ones there is - unless you keep them in the run 24/7, there's always a risk.

Foxes will seize any opportunity, and it sounds as if you have a large garden, you might even have been out there but turned away or been in another part of it, and the fox could still have struck.

Without you, those girls would not have had the three months of freedom that they enjoyed. Get some more to keep Clarissa company, and don't blame yourself.

 Poor girls were all ex-battery from the BHWT. THey had a miz life until 3 months ago and now they've had a miz death.

Don't say that - they probably had the time of their lives over the last 3 months, just think if they had died in the battery farms they never would have known what free ranging was like.

You should not beat yourself up over this, really sorry for your poor girls but I'm sure if they were out free ranging it would have been very quick. They will have died very happy chooks.

Oh what a very sad day for you. I've taken the same risk myself, and I think it's only natural really to do so, to take a bit of a chance, and this time it didn't work out well. I can see how bad you feel about it. As someone else said here, try not to be too hard on yourself if you can, you're only human, and just made a mistake. Hold on to the thought that they really had a lovely old time living with you, by the sounds of it.

Crazy is'nt it! Little feathered friends! I found my dear old hen recently, she was 9! She had the most wonderful life, I blubbed my eyes out!

RIP Snowy chickenlegs!

Dont blame yourself, try human wee and human hair around the garden, it is meant to work!

<> So sorry to hear about your Girls.

Don't feel guilty for leaving them outside while you popped in. It's just one of those things, and it would have been over so quickly the girls wouldn't have known anything about it.

Of course you're sad, chickens have this amazing knack of wrapping themselves around our hearts.

They had three months during which time they had the time of their lives, and they died whilst they were free, outside, doing the chickeny things that makes the difference between them being "egg-producing-machines" vs "chooks" . They were rooking about and being chooks, right up to the end.

And how much less wonderful their lives would have been if they'd had to be shut in so much more, because you weren't able to be out there with them.

You have NOTHING to blame yourself for.

Sorry to hear about your sad loss, it was very bad luck - but do remember that is all it is, bad luck, don't blame yourself, most of us have nipped indoors at one time or another, I know I've even been out having forgotten to put them away . It sounds like there weren't any clues that Mr Fox was in the area so how could you have known.

RIP to your girlies, even 3 months freedom makes up for a lifetime of being caged.
