Shanijo
Hi everybody just had our chickens over a fortnight and there is just a few questions I am hoping you might be able to answer, I put garlic powder in every other feed I have also just purchased some chicken spice is it okay to mix it with the garlic powder or not? If it is okay to mix how much do I put in for two chickens? Also I have made them a sand dustbath but they seem more intent on eating the sand than bathing in it is this okay? surferdog
Hi Nigel and Sharon, welcome to the forum I alternate garlic powder and Poultry spice in my girls feed just to try and give them some variety, but I can't imagine it would do any harm to mix it. Mine eat the sand from their dustbath too (and the compost and the DE.... ), doesn't seem to be doing them any harm though. I'm sure someone who knows what's what will be along soon... Janty
I have mixed poultry spice and garlic powder in the past but my lot won't touch anything which contains garlic powder ... fussy madams! I use layers mash with bokashi bran now instead of adding garlic powder to the feed. I can still add the poultry spice, limestone flour, etc. as I want to and the girls love it. I usually add a heaped tablespoon of limestone flour to their mash each day. I add the same amount of poultry spice but only through the winter months or when they are having synchronised moults. Laura & CTB
Mine get garlic powder in every feed and poultry spice gets used as a sprinkle on top of treats such as sweetcorn, lettuce, tuna etc. Mixing the two wont be a problem at all Maybe your girls will go off the sand once they realise there are much nicer things to eat but it wont do them any harm - just like eating very tiny bits of grit! Egluntyne
I only give mine poultry spice whn I think they need a boost. I can't see any problem mixing it with the garlic powder. Sand will give them interesting poos.
Olly
Mixing the two won't do any harm, but like Egluntine I reserve mine for moulting/winter months to give them a bit of a boost. Mine also ate all the sand when I tried to make them a dustbath, doesn't seem to have any ill-effects.
