AJuff
Well it seems my raised bed, despite being 6ft long, is no longer big enough. A few onions, broad beans, lettuce, peas and a single corgette have taken up all the room. The veg plot behind the garage has grown from a small fruit patch to accomodate potatoes. I now need space for french beans and parsnip and lots of other things I want to grow. How much space do I need???????????? Also what size greenhouse should I get to grow tomatoes, chillis, peppers and overwinter plants????
Couperman
Containers is the answer! you can grow almost all veg in pots especially if you choose dwarf varieties. Potatoes take up loads of room in the ground, but in barrels they take up very little and they are easier to harvest. Carrots work well in pots as carrot root flies can't get to them so easily. I am by no means an expert (haven't reached novice level yet) but all the veg we have in containers are doing great especially the spuds. Kev. AJuff
Always got for the biggest greenhouse you can fit in .....and Square Foot Gardening would be ideal for limited space.....there is a thread in this section somewhere....... Well I measured up the space where I wanted to put it (limited places due to the sun!!) and I can fit a small 6 x 4 greenhouse. Which if can grow tomatoes for a family of 5 that suits me. It's not that we are limited with space rather than OH doesn't want the garden turning into an allotment! He's already has a sense of humour failure about the playhouse, the 12ft trampoline, the eglu and all the runs and the walk in run!!!! Never mind a greenhouse!!!! I try to grow everything round the side of the house where it's out of the way of kids footballs and the hens!!!! (and OH)
Lesley
hmmmmmmmm - you could always try swapping the OH for a really big greenhouse .....how about Freecycle?
Guest
I've made a HUGE bed in the front garden into a veggie patch. Tomatoes are going somewhere else though, a sunny spot next to a wall by what was orginally the attached garage (now Mums bedroom!). As for a greenhouse, we have a large which is warped and badly sited under a large tree at the bottom of the garden, it is now destined to become part of the next extension to the chicken run! We are going to order our new one this afternoon - its 8.5 by 11 and octaganal, its pricey but we are buying it to last. He's already has a sense of humour failure about the playhouse, the 12ft trampoline, the eglu and all the runs and the walk in run!!!! I can see where he's coming from. When I mow the lawn I have to move a climbing frame, swing, slide, 13ft trampoline and a host of other garden toys. Oh and we have a "handyboy" booked to put the 12ft pool up next month!!!
