Does the ground you put the eglu on have to be perfectly horizontal? I can't work out a reason why this would be a problem, but if anyone can I'd be very pleased to hear it before we prepare our patch (which is level, or will be once we've woodchipped it, but slopes a little)

Thanks

It's better if the ground is flat, but it doesn't have to be perfectly flat. If it slopes, it must slope evenly, so the skirt sits down properly. If the skirt gapes, it shows the fox where to dig in.

Only reasons for avoiding a slope:

On a steep slope, the water and food containers wouldn't hold very much, but I don't think you are talking about anything as dramatic as this.

You wouldn't be able to weigh the skirt down with potted plants very easily on a slope, and the water would escape when you watered them; but you probably won't want to do this anyway.

Absolutely Gallina, the main reason is to make sure the skirt of the run sits completely square on the ground otherwise Mr Fox will find it very easy to dig under, but provided you make sure the skirt is secure to the grouns, either tent pegging or weighing it down (have to be pretty hefty though) then you should be fine. Watch out for dust baths too, ours have almost rivalled the Channel Tunnel and they ALWAYS do it near to the wire so it looks like they are going for the Great Escape!:roll:
