What sort of duck for the table?

Recommended Posts

Hello

We have a very broody hen at the moment and have decided to get some duck eggs to hatch - but what breed should we go for?

We basically would like to have a utility bird - so we can eat some

But I need to make sure that they are not noisy as we have many neighbours within potential hearing distance!

Many thanks

Fiona

Are you sure you want to hatch ducks under your hen? The mother hen can become very distressed when her babies dash off into the nearest pond :?

You may be better asking this question on the Practical Poultry site as more of their members may have done this.

Campbells make a good utility bird. We have three White Campbells, the ducks lay prolifically and any boy ducklings make good eating.

Yes, it had crossed my mind that the mother would be concerned, but I will admit to several reasons for hatching some eggs and choosing ducks.

1. This hen has been more broody than not ever since she started laying (Dec 07) so I felt it was probably best to get it out of her system!

2. I can't have any more hens (eglu full :( ) but do have another house suitable for ducks.

3. We prefer eating duck!

4. My son (17) has promised to clear the end of the garden and build a pond :D:D:D:D - if we get ducks

5. We kept them when I was a child and I'm regressing!

Well may be they should use a different site.Omlet is not about raising them to eat.Thats why l paid so much money for the cube and eglus and l use this site.I would not put in to a company that supports this. :x there could have been a warning put on this post for real animal overs beware very up setting subject.

Tara, this site is for Eglu/Cube owners and people who keep poultry. Some people with Eglus DO raise them for the table. Lesley, for one, has a whole host of Eglus and raises birds to eat. Let's not be judgemental please.

I have changed the title of the thread so that anyone who finds the subject offensive doesn't have to look at it.

Like l said we dont all do this so there should have been a waring on this post.I use pratical poultry and l never go into the bit about eating them which upsets me very very much so l stay away.As this subject is not for every one then not every one wishes to read about such things. There should have been a warning  on this post.
