leopardstar
I've just picked up three pekin pullets they are 9 weeks old, they're to go with my two existing bantums. We've got an omlet cube with extension and they live on our lawn. the pullets were in a straw bed when I picked them up. Will they be ok on grass, I'm worried about them eating too much grass as they're only small. I don;t think they've been out on grass up until now? chicken mum
I would be interested in this reply as well. I have two Frizzle Pekin Bantams who are now nine weeks old ( I got them about a week ago ). They have been free ranging since we got them and seem fine on grass and everything the two older chickens eat. They are growing brilliantly well and look healthy but I hope they are ok to eat everything they find - they certainly seem to like it, including the hordes of corn they pick up from the other two when they get fed from the hand! Janty
Be careful. I picked up three pekins that were the same age as yours in my early days of keeping chickens. I lost two of them. The breeder told me that they would be ok on layers pellets and on grass. Looking back it was totally naive of me and I didn't give them a fair chance. I started panicing when the second one died and did some research, I put Nugget onto growers pellets, moved her off the grass and she thrived. She will always be a bit weak but she lays lovely little eggs then falls asleep for a few hours or so.
Karen Pimlott
we still have our babies on heat at 9 weeks & on chick crumb we introcuce growers pellets gradually from 12 weeks when we start to ween off heat, at 14 ish weeks they go out on the pasture. 9 weeks is very young. Egluntyne
I wouldn't put them in with your existing hens yet. They are far too young. Can you borrow a rabbit hutch for the time being?
