Floppy Wing.....

Recommended Posts

Hello All.....

Just after some advice really as I am very confused about Maisy. :?

I noticed yesterday that her wing on her left side is slighty limp. I would describe it as not being as close to her body as it was, it hangs away slighty. The other chooks do not have this and she only has it on one side.

Now, I am unsure if she has just got a lazy wing or if she has hurt herself. We have examined her and she can still move and flap the wing and we can extend it with no noise or pecking from her. I do not think she is in pain as she will let you touch it with no grief. It looked ok when extended but when you release the wing it doesnt sit against her body right.

The girls do get over excited especially when we feed them spaghetti (!) and they run all over the place and bump into each other so I am unsure if one of the other ladies has caught her and maybe bruised her wing?

Does anyone know what this could be, please?

Thank you

When you say limp, do you mean dropped?

If so, I don't want to worry you and get you upset unnecessarily, but that is usually what happens when a chicken is "giving up on life", so please be prepared for the worst.

Are they lethargic as well?

All of my chooks that have died, showed the above signs before passing away within a few days...

Hi OffSping,

Yes it is slighty dropped, although I would describe it as not tucking neatly into her body like the other chooks.

She is still fine in herself and isn't legthargic at all. Shes the livliest of the bunch!

This is why I am confused as its not seeming to bother her at all. It just doesn't look right.

I am slighty worried now if your birds have had this and then died. .... I don't think she laid yesterday either which was unusual...

Well all the ones that I had that died, were all lethargic as well. So they wasn't moving around, dustbathing, preening, eating or drinking properly etc.

If she is still lively, then you might be lucky and she could just be having a little rest or an off day or something!

How old is she roughly?

We got them from Omlet in April - So only had them a few months. They were not that old when they came to us.

She is still eating, drinking, bouncing around and generally winding up the other girls  ...... She seems fine in herself. I just thought it was rather odd. It doesnt look right but she seems happy enough...

I just wondered if it was a sign of something, or maybe she was just being lazy!

I just hope we aren't going to loose her soon. :(

I didn't even think of the heat! :o

I feel so silly .... ... It is such an obvious thing.

.... They do have shaded area's in the garden - Yes. Although they do like to bathe in the sun which I would imagine makes them rather warm!!

It is rare that we get weather this warm, so it isn't something you would see all that often. :)

Your telling me!! :wink::lol:

My chooks do proper sunbathing when it's hot and the sun is shinning...

As soon as the sun comes out from behind the clouds they all keel over and flop on their sides, they spread out their wing like a solar panel and just lie there basking in the sun!

So they must think it's a rarity as well and try to make the most of it!
