Ain't Nobody Here
ES's 16th birthday next week. Had no idea what he wanted but now says he'd like an xbox. Happy to get one but know nothing about them . Can anyone enlighten me? I like to do a lot of research into new technology but I need to get it for next Tuesday if poss . Couple of questions to start off: What size memory should I get? Amazon have a 20GB console. Is that unnecessarily big? If you want to get on the internet with it, can you get wireless access? Can you use an existing wireless router? Any extras I should be looking out for? It could well be a joint (and only!) present for both boys so happy to spend a bit more. Anywhere particular (online) sell them at a good price?Advice gratefully (and desperately!) received .
Shirl
Couple of questions to start off:What size memory should I get? Amazon have a 20GB console. Is that unnecessarily big? It depends if he wants to download demos and videos on it. If not he'll just be using it for saving games which takes up to about 5mb per game so he could get away with smaller. If you want to get on the internet with it, can you get wireless access? Can you use an existing wireless router? You can get wireless access but you'll need an adaptor http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Wireless-Bridge-Required-Online/dp/B000AYTQ7O/ref=pd_sbs_ce?ie=UTF8&qid=1213121900&sr=1-3 Any extras I should be looking out for? It could well be a joint (and only!) present for both boys so happy to spend a bit more. If you go for the premium or ultimate pack then no. Otherwise look at those packs and see if you think the extras might be "needed" Anywhere particular (online) sell them at a good price? No ideaAdvice gratefully (and desperately!) received . speckleyboo
the 120 isnt unnecessarily big, depending on the type of gamer your son is, if he isnt a obsessive gamer, you probably do not need the elite system, but just the standard 360. the 360 should connect to an existing wireless router, though i believe it needs an attachment/adaptery thing as for extras, depends on where you buy from, gaming shops tend to do deals with games or extra controllers, that sort of them. best to shop around abit, look in Game and Gamestation, for gaming deals, argos, woolworths also, then electrical shops like currys and comet, online places (though al previous mentioned shops have websites, i mean only online) amazon, play.com are good, also possibly ebay, though with ebay you have to be extremely careful with what you're buying and who you're buying from. hope this helps, im a big gamer myself, and am saving for a 360, i currently have an nintendo wii, but most of my friends have 360s. i'll be happy to answer further questions if you have any[/url]
Guest
Hi - I'll ask my eldest son to respond as he is the expert... here he is.... You can get wireless internet access and you can use an existing router, however you would also need to buy a wireless adapter that plugs into the back and they are quite expensive. If your computer is nearby you can get an ethernet cable and connect the computer and xbox with that, which is much cheaper and sometimes more reliable. I think you get a month of online play free but after that it costs about £40 per year (which isn't that much, but you might not have known, so you might want to ask your boys if they are prepared to pay for the online themselves). The 20GB xbox is actually the default model (it doesn't come smaller), so I'd reccomend getting that. There is a version with six times the memory(!) but it is also more expensive If it's for two people you might want to buy a second controller so that they can both play at once (although not all games allow more than one person at a time). Good luck! (: ES's 16th birthday next week. Had no idea what he wanted but now says he'd like an xbox. Happy to get one but know nothing about them . Can anyone enlighten me? Katie
My boyfriend is obsessed with xbox But I must say xbox live is really fun! And it's about £40 for the year. Steer clear of the Arcade xbox, because it's memory is really wierd, I don't know why.. but that's all I know haha! Ooh and also get an extra controller, because most only come with one, unless stated. = less arguments!
Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks everyone . Very useful advice . He says he doesn't think he'll be downloading videos etc, so I reckon the 20gb will be fine. The money saved can go towards the wireless thingy instead .
