Ms Tilytinkle
Hello all you dear peeps, As some of you may remember warning me to avoid the Chicken Clinic. Its with sheer common sense fuelled with determination that i venture in here. Before i had chickens i did research, read lots of good advice, care, maintenance etc but it didn't seem to be the same then reading the information as to how it would feel now!! Having the chickens, sharing the knowledge & experience is totally different about reading. What was simply words is now my lovely much loved chickens !! So adapting my usual philosophy . .. prevention better than cure etc Please may i pop in & ask a few questions so i may understand more about things i really don't know enough about. Rhapsody was talking about sour crop, someone else mentioned impacted crop. Please could you explain to me what exactly is crop, what is the difference between sour and impacted etc What are the symptoms, things to look out for etc How is it caused & what can be done to make it better. Thank you, thank-you & thankyou. Ms Tillywantstohopefullylearnmoreknowledgebeforeexperiencingthereality.
The Dogmother
Okey doke, here's a potted version: Impacted crop is when the crop gets bunged up with undigested food - this is often caused by stringy grass or the suchlike. Most common in greedy hybrids, the crop will still be full in the morning and hard to the touch. Sour crop is squichy and the hens breath will often reek - the contents of the crop have started to ferment. If I remember rightly, there are threads about both of these in the FAQ section; very useful part of the forum, that.
Ms Tilytinkle
Thank you so much, thats a great concise description & of good help to me. Thankyou yes i will look at the FAQ section too. I've had to limit the time i share within this wonderful chicken keeping virtual reality as i could spend all day happily reading as time just disappears, so i tend only to read a few posts in 'chickens bit' then dash back to non-virtual reality Will keep an eye on their bulge, i have noticed them at night & have often thought wow what on earth have you girlies been eating!! Many Thanks Ms Tillyhopesthesunisshiningforyou&yours
