Hi,

 

had our two - Charlie and Dino - a few days now. I have seen that they should eat approx 100-140 g of pellets a day......how do you measure this?

 

How much does the grub hold?

 

Any other signs to check they are eating ok?

 

not worried, just interested.

I just fill the grub feeder up and refill when necessary. They don't eat very much at all when you first get them. When they start laying, you will see the food go down much quicker. They need the food to produce eggs and they really do eat lots more.

mine have free access to a trough of pellets they seem to stop when they are full, then they get a treat mid afternoon, then seem to fill up again before bed time!!! that's it! I did start measuring but got myself wound up when they ate a bit less or a bit more so now I don;t bother

In my first week of chicken ownership, I weighed out the correct amount per hen per day on the kitchen scales and tipped it into the grub holder. Just to get a sense of how much they might eat once they start laying.

 

Now I just fill it up and slosh in loads of pellets, they last a few days. The chooks self regulate and eat what they want. Any pellets a few days old, just add warm water and they go grainy and the chooks hoover them up like a treat....

I think that you may soon be asking the question, "How do I know if they're eating too much?"

If they are bobbing about happily, doing hennish things, they are eating enough.

 

I just fill the grubs and let them get on with it.
