redfrock
I am going to sound really dim asking this but how quickly can a chook lose feathers during a moult? Does it happen very gradually or can you have a sudden flurry of them, like a dandelion clock?!? Only within a period of about 4 hours I have ended up with a run full of black feathers . I've thought that Carmen was starting to moult for a while, and these feathers are jet black, so they are almost certainly hers or Tuesday's. I'm almost certain they do not belong to either of my broodies - who have been shut out of the cubes, in the run, most of the day. To be honest there were that many that initial thoughts suggested something nasty, but realistically that is not the case as I have been home all day with the door open and they have been in the run all afternoon and not a peep from them. I have been in and out of the garden all day, and I know for certain this isn't a fox issue. There is no blood and none of the girls are upset or injured, Carmen just looks a little less fluffy round the hem of her knickers.
Egluntyne
One of mine lost most of her feather literally overnight last year. Like you say, there was a run full of black feathers. She was OK though and feathered up again over a couple of months.
