Sadie is one our our new girls,a speckedly. We have had her for nearly four weeks and during that time her tail has been down. She eats and drinks happily enough but doesn't show that much enthusiaism for treats, she appears very placid - are speckedlys normally like this We thought she might 'perk up' once she started to lay but she has laid two eggs now and nothing has changed. She doesn't appear ill in any way just a bit listless - she was bullied a bit but things have calmed down now, have we reason to worry

I've no experience of Speckeldys I'm afaid . Sorry to hear you're worried about her - if she's laying and generally doesn't seem ill, perhaps it's just her temperament? She may gain confidence as she gets older.

I've got a speckledy (also called Sadie!) I would say she's quite laid-back, she's the biggest girl but is often at the back of the queue for treats, and she doesn't rush about quite as much as the gingernuts.

 

If your chook has been like this for four weeks, and yet she is eating, drinking, laying and not showing any signs of ill-health, then my guess would be that this is her natural temperament - they're all different. Chickens are very good at hiding illness, but after four weeks I would think that if she was ill, you would have seen some more symptoms.

 

I think you've just got a relaxed, chilled-out chicken!

You're probably right - I would just feel a bit happier if her tail was up perhaps she is still settling in

I'm sure Sadie is okay, but maybe she has worms? Have you checked her droppings? Any mucky fluffy knickers?

Her knickers are the fluffiest of all and not mucky - but some one has stringy poos sometimes, would it hurt to treat her for worms just in case?

I would use flubenvet as it won't do them any harm. I started a week's course today. I last wormed them in Feb/March time, so they are due.

My speckledy is top hen and is always at the front of the queue for treats, so I would not say that they are necessarily laid back! There does seem to be quite a bit of variation in behaviour within breeds as far as I can deduce from the various posts on this forum.

Perhaps its just speckedlys called Sadie that are laid back
