gracefruit
I was just visiting the farm behind our house -- they have lots of lovely ducks, turkeys, chickens, and bantams. They've been suffering fox attacks daily, losing a bird a day for the past few days. The fox was last seen today at noon! I don't know why I assumed these things happened at dusk, dawn, or in the middle of the night. Looks like it can happen any time. Yikes! chucknette
Hi I had a close call with a fox today around 1.20pm luckily managed to avoid any devasation. The foxes are around all of the time and they arent afraid of people anymore Shame they are partial to a chicken takeaway
superjules
I've heard of people seeing them as late as 10am and as early as 5pm at this time of year, but midday in what sounds like at least a semi-rural environment is a big reality slap for the "foxes only come out at night" brigade. It's very worrying indeed.
koo2cat
My friend who has an eglu lost her 3 hens to a fox last Sunday. They saw him in the garden and by the time they ran out he had got them. They were in a large open run and it happened at 5.30pm on a very sunny day! It does happen. Really hope mine aren't next but I can't keep them in the Cube run all day - they go nuts! gracefruit
It is very disconcerting. And it certainly has me thinking carefully about where I'll put the Eglu. As for free-ranging, they'll have to be supervised. Losing three hens like that -- terrible!
Stevie
Despite Foxes being nocturnal-they are however opportunist hunters so farm poultry will always be a target.
