hybrids or pure breeds to go with my girls...

Recommended Posts

hi

am in a pickle....having researched more chickens for a friend I have decided to get a couple more girls...well, maybe 3 more! where does it stop!!! :roll::lol:

I am wondering whether to mix pure breeds with my hybrids or whether to stick with the hybrids.

i want a dark egg layer and a white egg layer (maybe) that are sort of friendly enough to eat out of a pot - my kids visit them daily with treat offerings!

I was told to get a suffolk noir but i am now being told their eggs are not as dark as a maran....but they appear to be almost impossible to get at point of lay.

I have been offered a maran and a vorwerk that are 8 weeks old (I do have my eglu I could keep them in), but I have also been offered a suffolk noir and a white star (I think it was called) that are approx 14-16 weeks.

I have also spoken to the man at the Garden Hen who has got a leghorn, a maran and a aracana (I think that's right) but I would have to go on a waiting list as they are in so much demand!!!

I want to get my hens introduced to the (potential) new girls asap but am also keen to get the mix right first.

Decisions decisions..... :lol::lol:

Any advice or comments please....... :roll::lol:

I've got two black rocks hybrid, brown eggs, and a silver laced wyandotte bantam pure breed, white eggs and a what was supposed to be cream legbar which was to lay blue eggs but lays white so is a gold legbar pure breed all in together the legbar is soft as anything and daft as a brush Wyandottes are a bit more feisty!! Black rocks are just insane!!

Hi,

I have a mixture of hybrids and pure breeds and they all get along well. I would definitely recommend the Vorwerk - mine is the friendliest of all my girls, she never stops chatting and follows me everywhere. She also lays beautiful white eggs.

I have to Omlet Pepperpots and a white hybrid (White Star) she is very nervous, flighty, and noisy, I think this is characteristic of the breed. She does however lay the most beautiful pure china white eggs.

I also have a pure breed (Light Sussex) who is also very noisy and nervous lays lovely cream/beige eggs though.

We had quite a few problems introducing the 2 white ones to the 2 Pepperpots and I think the fact that they looked so different didn't help
