Thornberry
Hi Everyone Please can someone help. Our hen has been attacked and lost alot of feathers and has few flesh wounds. I have given her arnica and calendula and treated the wounds topically with hypercal tincture. We kept her in the house in a box last night and she did eat and drink and does seem well apart from this droopy wing and being a bit bald and bruised. The wound are healing well so far and she even layed an egg. The wing almost looks dislocated. I am hoping the arnica will help, but I am worried that she is in pain. Should I imobilise it? And if so, then how? Thanks
Egluntyne
To be honest, I'd be inclined to take her to a vet as dog bites are notorious for getting infected. The wing sounds as if it needs examining too. Yor first aid sounds spot on, but I would keep her confined so that she doesn't damage the wing further. I would also beef up your security so that the dog can't get at the hens again. Welcome to the forum.
jomo1972
If its hanging down, its broken. But its really easy to fix and can be mended very successfully. Just get a bandage and strap her wing in place to her body. So wrap the bandage under the good wing and around the broken one and the rest of her body. It will impact her balance but she'll be fine. I've had this happen several times and the hens did fine.
Thornberry
Thanks for the replies. Our hen seems to be doing fine and we have taken her out of confinement and put her out with her friends. She seems oblivious to her narrow escape. I didn't go the vet route as I thought it may cause her even more distress and she seems to be well. Her wounds still look to be healing well. jomo1972: Thanks for your tip about the wing . How long do you recommend I keep it strapped up for? jomo1972
don;t know really. Whenever I've done this they always remove it themselves within only a few days and then I can't tell which hen was the sufferer. It seems to work though.
