Broodies

Recommended Posts

I hate Summer.

A bit of a drastic statement, I know!

:(

I have four broodies at the moment. I have them all in separate broody cages ( my woodwork skills have been coming in handy lately ). Trouble is, they are not covered up in a nice dark eglu or cube and they make noise when it gets light and they want attention. It was at 5.05 this morning. The neighbours are great but I want to keep them that way so I dive out of bed to give them their layers mash porridge and try to quieten them down.

How do other people cope in this situation? I have tried covering them up but I am also using an eglu run as a broody cage and this proved impossible to cover completely.

Fotunately, I've only ever had one broody and that's enough ( if any of my other girls are reading this)! As far as I was aware is better to give them lots of light to help snap them out of it.

As you say shame it's summer and the mornings are so bright. Are you able to move them to a shady part of the garden at night? I know it would be a faff but might save you a few hours sleep.

I had 4 broody's at the same time recently.

I did leave them to it for weeks (and weeks!) but eventually took the plunge.

I spent a weekend dunking them in cold water and filling the cube nest box with ice packs - about 7 filled it nicely. :D

In the evenings I put huge flower pots in - again filling it so they couldn't squeeze in between.

I'm sure its the flower pots filling the nesting box in the evening that had the best effect, fortunately the others would still lay on ice blocks and didn't want to lay before I got up in the morning. :D
