Chickendoodle
Can I check that I have got the feeding right for my girls - I keep them in the run until about 10.30 so that they can feed up on the layers pelletts/grit. They are then let out to free range - they keep popping beck to the Eglu for a sleep and to have a nibble of food. At around 3pm I give them a handful of pasta whidh they devour as if they have never eaten before!! To get them back into the run I give them a big handful of mixed corn around 7 pm. Is this OK as I see from the other posts that they shouldn't have too much "junk" food. They are all around 17 weeks. I am amazed how easy they are to look after (so far) and how much fun. My dog is getting on with them really well - he has a little chase sometimes but he just runs behind them at their pace and it is really funny to watch - yesterday Henry (the dog) and Dolly were running round and round the outside of the run - never catching up with each other - it reminded me of the indoor cycling races where they start from different sides of the track
Sue and the Spice Girls
That seems OK to me, you may want to give them some mixed grit, or old egg shells which have been heated in a very hot oven and then crushed to keep the eggshells hard when they come along. I let my girls out at about 7.30am and they just come and go for pellets etc all day. I get them in with a mixed handfull of corn and mixed grit, whcih seems to go fairly quickly. They love tomatoes, grapes and sultanas too!
Ain't Nobody Here
That sounds OK. When they start laying they'll start to eat much more. If you find they're not laying regularly (once they've been laying a while) you can try reducing the treats a bit. Too much corn can make them fat which may affect egg production, so just watch you don't give them too much (I think it's about 1oz per bird per day?) Chickendoodle
Thanks very much - will weigh the corn so I know how much my handful weighs - mind you they are getting a fair bit of exercise with their running races with the dog so probably won't get fat
