hilda-and-evadne
Without all the experience and expertise here, I think that I would have made a lot of mistakes or not had the confidence to do the right thing by the hens. Poultry-keeping would have been much harder work, without all the advice and information on this forum. My bullied hen (Evadne) is noticeably brighter and happier, now that she doesn't have to spend all night with Hilda having her feathers pulled out and not being able to escape. Hilda has reconciled herself to being removed at bedtime from the eglu in the run to sleep in the second eglu. And Evadne is so nice to her in the mornings when I return Hilda to the run - she tootles away, sounding thrilled to welcome Hilda back. This morning I decided to start doing something about the day-time bullying because Evadne's bum looks a bit oven-ready on one side. (I haven't caught Hilda eating the feathers but that doesn't mean she isn't, of course.) Luckily, I had read others' accounts of how not to use Ukadex, so I managed to keep it nearly all on Evadne's bum. Cor - the smell seems to go up your nose and stay there. I was a bit worried about the smell (might make the neighbours turn against my chickens) but am hoping that, as it is a weekday, they will think that the Council has been tarring a road or carrying out wood treatment somewhere nearby. In the vicinity of the run, there is still a strong smell like scorched wood but, as there is quite a breeze today to blow it around, my neighbours probably won't associate that with the chickens. (Fingers crossed and hoping to keep all conversations with neighbours away from the subject of smell.)
Laura & CTB
Glad things are sorting themselves out for you. I often wonder if the chooks are holding their noses in the eglu after they've been sprayed with Ukadex ..and I agree the forum is a fab place to gain knowledge and share experiences with a great bunch of people (also a great timewaster too )
