I contacted a lady that sells jam at that farmers' market and part of what she said was...

....Anyone who makes food has to let their council know. They may then come and inspect you. Best to look up your council's criteria before informing them! Weights and Measure (now Trading Standards) will also want to know about your labelling and ingredients. Yes, you need to have product liability insurance.....

The first 2 criteria are a bit of pain but i could sort that out but I can't afford insurance as there's so little profit in this anyway and I only wanted to do my local market. I think, to make a decent profit, you'd have to do several markets!

She said I can make lemon curd for her if I want to and help her on her stall (to get some experience) so I'm pondering that at the moment but it would mean her labels on the jars rather than mine and I'm sure she'd want a cut of the meagre profit!

I might take her up on her offer, depending on how much she wants etc

what do you think?

I think, providing she doesn't take a huge cut, I'll take her up on her offer. It would be good experience and I'd get an idea of how popular the product would be.

I might even be able to get the ingredients cheaper as my MIL has a card for a wholesalers. I'll still get the eggs from the local farm but the rest of it I could hopefully get cheaper.

I'm a bit disappointed but nothing worthwhile is easy, is it?
