Excited, our broody hen sitting on fertilised eggs

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, the wet weather is not much fun is it. The chooks are looking rather sad all huddled under their run and Tink is still going strong brooding over her eggs.

Just seen Gallina's photos of her Buff and she looks lovely. Its so funny when they fluff up and get all indignant that you dare to look in their direction. I got some meal worms today and got her out and she went mad for them. Still a way to go yet and hopefully there will be some chicks at the end of it.

Hi Henny Penny, that is a very good question. My plan is to let them stay with Mum in the hutch and then once they are old enough will take them out and put them in run with Mum in the garden and let the other chickens see them all together. Still not sure that is the best thing to do though so more research probably needed.

I let my chicks free range with the others (with Mum's protection) at about 6 or 8 weeks (sorry, can't remember precisely). I kept a firm watch on the big flock and they were fine - the little uns had plenty of space to run away and fled for their mum's petticoats at the slightest sign of danger.

Do take care though and keep a firm eye on them.
