Old Speckled Hen
Does anybody have experience of FOXWATCH I have ordered one but I am unsure where to put it. I have an eglu in the garden but Chooks are kept in a wooden coop at night. How sensitive is the body heat detector? Will it pick up movement in the coop? Thanks for any ideas
Tessa the Duchess
I have a foxwatch. I am not sure how sensitive it is, but you want to locate it so that it's range takes in as much of your chicken set up as possible. I have located mine behind my Eglu and big run it's range covers the whole set up and also covers the area of fencing where I know the foxes were getting in. I can honestly say that since installling it I have not seen any signs of foxes in the garden, whereas before I had it they visited every day in daylight and at night. The instructions that come with it clearly tell you the range in feet so it's quite easy to find the best place for it. Good luck and may foxes never go near your chickens Tessa
Olly
I also think it's kept the fox out of my garden, but would never rely on it totally - I always supervise free-ranging. I used to have regular foxy visits, and like Tessa I haven't seen one since I got it. I put mine behind the run facing away from it, so that it isn't triggered by the chickens moving around, because they will just set it off constantly and run the batteries down. It's not the run itself that you want to cover, it's the likely approach that the fox will take, so point it to cover any obvious paths or holes in the fence. I also move mine every so often, just to make sure Foxy Loxy hasn't adopted a different route that avoids it.
Egluntyne
I have a foxwatch. I too have set it up to cover as much of the chicken area as posssible. I think they do help, but shouldn't be relied upon totally.
Matthew
Does anybody have experience of FOXWATCHI have ordered one but I am unsure where to put it. I have an eglu in the garden but Chooks are kept in a wooden coop at night. How sensitive is the body heat detector? Will it pick up movement in the coop? Thanks for any ideas Its has a motion sensor, so detects movement much like a security outside light, not body heat. If your hens are inside a solid structure at night they won't trigger it

Old Speckled Hen
Thanks for all your advice. Will play around with the position when I get it. My last three chooks were taken in the night when my mum failed to secure the door when I was away on hols. Never seen a fox in the day, country foxes are much more shy than their urban cousins. My dream is to annexe a small part of my neighbour's huge wild garden and surround it with an electric fence.
