2009 Omlet cube and run for sale

My OH told me this morning that he thought he heard one of the chickens being noisy, so I went out to investigate and there was an egg in the run - much paler than the eggs we have had so far so I think it must be Mary who hasnt laid an egg yet. The others two are always in the nest box. Do they sometimes do this, will she work out about the next box or will they just be laid wherever she happens to be?

If it is her first egg, it might have taken her by surprise.

well, most hens if they are new to laying will sometimes lay other places to begin with.

 

If you have a hen like my Ella, who is a law unto herself - she will lay anywhere - lawn, run, decking, by the pond...she chooses the location and drops it there and then! I dont think she can be bothered running back to the nestbox

Two of our first eggs were in the run too! All the rest have been in the nestbox .

Thanks for the replies, she did look a bit as though it had surprised her - put my mind at rest though as was beginning to wonder if she would ever lay!

we had 2 of them quite early on - fortunately I have a 4 year old daughter who fitted in nicely to get them out!!
