inspired by reading people's treat ideas, I put a tray of gone to seed mixed salad and one of those 'living salad' things you get from the supermarket into the run. I have never seen such suspicion!! they have all circled both trays very cautiously, but not even a peck!! perhaps I should offer them some vinaigrette with it?!

Ahh, well, Mine did the same thing with lettuce the first time I gave them it, they didn't seem to think it was food either.

 

But I presevered (sp?) and found that once they had worked out what it was they loved it.

 

I forgot this and took some to a friend for her chooks, and they did exactly the same thing, circled it with suspicion. Reading your post reminded me.

Once they get over their initial suspicion there is no stopping them, I find,

 

They strip a lettuce bare in minutes.

the banties seem to be getting the hang of it now - they are such dainty little things, I'm sure they know salad is good for them while I reckon the 'big girls' are holding out for steak frites! good to see the little ones diving in first for a change, they tend to be the last in the queue at the moment.

My ex-batts had obviously never seen greens before they came to me and looked at them initially like I was offering them poison. Once they had tried the cabbage stalks and lettuce, there was no holding them back and they're now like a plague of locusts. I don't refer to them as the scoffalots because of their picky eating habits and delicate table-manners

 

The first time they were offered grapes, they all turned up their beaks until I split one so they could see there was soft stuff inside. Dandelion then caught on very quickly and the look of sheer smugness as she waddled off with her first full grape in her beak was a sight to behold . Now they break the land speed record getting up the garden if there's even a sniff of a grape to be had.

 

It doesn't take them long to get past the suspicion, and then they'll want everything and look at you in sheer disbelief if you go out with empty hands. Wot no goodies?

Has anyone tried giving their girls the empty pods after shelling peas? I don't like to chuck them out if the girls can have them.
