michele
Hello, I am thinking of getting some new hens but not sure whether to get hybrids or pure breeds. I know that hybrids lay well in their first couple of years and then egg production gets less. Obviously it depends on the individual birds, but does anyone know how many years you can expect hybrids to continue to lay for ?
Egluntyne
I have some 4 year olds who are still laying two or three times a week.
WitchHazel
Althoujh the hybrid's laying life is expected to be considerably shorter than that of a pure breed, don't forget that with a hubrid you get eggs all year round; most purebreeds stop (or are erratic) winter layers. I read in one of the many books on chickens that overall in their lifetime you can probably expect the same number of eggs from both hybrids and pure breeds, it's just how it's spread out that's different. cluckbok
If it's eggs you really wanting then I would say Hybrids. Pure breeds tend not to lay during the winter whereas the hybrids should lay but just a bit less.
