oggybags
I have 4 chooks 3 or which are regular egg layers, 1 we think has just started to lay, and suddenly 2 of the reg layers have started to loose feathers, quite a few from arounds their er, 'back', they are both fine in themselves, I have checked under wings for mites etc, and all is clear, but it looks very not right - literally it is to their skin! The other 2 chooks are normal - any ideas?? thanks
Egluntyne
Sounds like a moult.
oggybags
Is it possible that they could be moulting at 30 weeks old?
Geoid
Have a look at the FAQ, its full of useful info Edited August 1, 2008 by Guest
Gallina
If everyone read the Frequently Asked Questions, there wouldn't be any much of a forum, because no one would be asking anything. That would be sad, as sometimes new ideas come up. That sounds too early for a moult to me. Could the hens be pecking each other?
Egluntyne
That is a bit stark, Fred.
Helen&Lee
I'm sure my chicken book says they don't moult that soon Can't check because it's currently loaned out. Could you have a feather pecker amongst them? I have one, and it's not easy to catch them at it - in fact I've never seen them. You can buy an anti-peck spray, try the Johnsons one to start, available from Pets at Home in the 'pigeon/caged bird' section.
Geoid
That is a bit stark, Fred. I guess it is a bit, sorry. But read the FAQ anyway, lots of useful tips on there.
