Buying chickens in Hertfordshire - any recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I'm a complete newbie to the world of chickens but am counting down the hours to the delivery of my Cube on Monday (yay!). I'd like to start off with 4 or 5 ladies but really don't know anywhere in my area (near St Albans) where I could buy them.

Can anyone recommend a good, reputable seller in Herts / Beds? I have a car and am happy to drive to outlying areas (within reason!!).

Thank you :)

Hi Niamh

Welcome to the forum.

I can highly recommend Thorne's at Letchworth Garden City - lots of lovely chickens and good advice on anything chicken-related!

Hi

How exciting about your cube....i was told about thornes in letchworth when i asked about chicken breeders. They had all sorts of different ones I think. I also spoke to Woodside Farm centre (or something like that) in Luton. They had equivalent to Gingernut rangers and pepperpots there.

The meadowsweet website was quite helpful as well, but it depends what you are after.

Omlet emailed me a list of my 5 nearest chicken breeders, also very helpful.

I went miles to get all sorts of different ones. Warwickshire Rare breeds farm and Merrydale poultry. Both were really helpful and lovely hens.

Good luck and enjoy your girls (and lovely fresh eggs...yum yum!)

Hi & Welcome.

I can highly recommend Thornes. I get most of my chicken supplies from there and can often be found wondering around wanting more chickens. :D

I can also recommend Woodside Wildfowl Park, Slip End, nr Luton as that's where I got Bobbi, Rae & Cynthia from. :D

Hi, I am in St Albans and have a cube ( 10 days!) I got 4 chooks from Omlet and 24 hours later introduced 2 chooks from Thornes.

Frank at Thornes is very helpful, my chooks have settled in very well. I got an Am

ber star/silver link and a speckeldy, they cost £13 each.

If you want any help., new as I am, pm me and `I will give you my phone number.

Hi, I am in St Albans and keep bantams on my allotment. If you are interested in bantams you could try Kerry Wilson at Markyate she may be able to help. There is also a lady in Smallford who currently has Silkie chicks (unsexed) for sale. Good luck with your poultry keeping. It is a fantastic hobby.  Have been keeping bantams for 12 years. If I can be of any help let me know.
