beach chick
dont know if this makes sense, but my 3 laying girls (Paris and Char, about 18mths I guess, and Sugar who is about 24 weeks) are definitely the top girls. Meringue should lay next in terms of age (24 wks), but Crunchie (16 wks) looks almost as mature as her. these 2 almost come next in terms of pecking order, but Muffin and Crumpet the 16 wk old banties will give them a run for their money. meanwhile, Apricot (16 wks) is definitely lowest of the low, but looks much more mature than her bantie sisters - she's got wattles and everything. will it all change when more people are laying? what has everyone else noticed? Egluntyne
It does shift when they start laying. I've noticed the underdog become quite bossy once she starts laying once or twice. The balance of power withing the group shifts all the time anyway. Why that should be is anyone's guess.
Purplemaniacs
I agree with Egluntine, we found that the balance of power changed as ours began to lay. It has also changed recently, Ivory has been broody and has now started to lay again, she is now bottom chook and is being pecked by the others, nothing too nasty at the moment so just keeping an eye on them at the moment. ajm200
To begin with the pecking order seemed to match the order that the girls came into lay but 4 months on they are all laying and the youngest chicken is definately in charge around here.... (Kind of reflects our family life )
