What gauge weld mesh are people using for their large walk in secure runs please? I have seen some which is 1.6 mm and another which is '19' gauge, anyone know what the 19 stands for?

My OH is making a new very large run so that the girls (+ new ones when it is up and running ) can 'free range' in safety. I have an idea for utilising the cube run (all three bits of it) :? as feeding bays and an isolation pen for miscreants!!

The guage indicates how strong the wire is. The lower the number, the better the wire (and the more expensive). 19guauge is the minimum you should consider, and 16 guage is much better.

The other measurement is the mesh size. The smaller the mesh, the more weldmesh is used, and so the more expensive it is. The Eglu and Cube runs are 2inch by 1 inch, and you don't really want it bigger than that. We went for 1 inch squares in the end.

Hope that helps

Have just ordered from Devon people - theirs was the most suitable. They haven't said they don't have 48" x 1" x 1" x 30m so I have my fingers crossed. I am away from the 18th to the 28th, so 'am hoping it will be ready for me by the time I get back :lol: Then I can think about restocking. Any suggestions? I know I'll now have an avalanche of ideas 8)

I ordered from them 2 weeks ago (the 1in x 1in) then they told me none in stock, there was also someone on the forum who ordered the same size from them about a month ago and they were out of stock then...they should keep their site updated really. Anyway I ended up ordering the 1in x half inch 16g and on reading around I am glad I did, nothing could get into that size weldmesh. with a hard roof the run would be completely bio secure from wild birds and rats. I read on another forum that someone found a rat stuck half in and half out a 1in 1in weldmesh  so although it is a bit more expensive for the smaller holes I think it is worth it and also on shopping about it is a really good price.
