Local paper reported Chickens being stolen!!

Recommended Posts

Not sure this is the right place to post but:

I opened up our local paper this evening only to find that about 5 mins away from where we live someone had their chickens stolen, we haven't even got ours yet (getting them Sat) but I am really worried they will be stolen now after reading the article!! Our garden is fenced (about 7ft) all the way round and the eglu will be going right up against the house but we have a public footpath behind the house and worried someone will jump over and take them  any ideas how we might be able to protect them a bit or should I not be too worried? the footpath behind is very quiet and hardly used but still I do worry! I wanted to get a flood light but hubby said that won't put them off, what do you think?

Garden lighting with PIR detectors is proven to deter intruders because thieves prefer to work in darkness where they wont get seen.7ft though is a good fence height and provided your gates are secure-you should be alright. If you have any doubts-you could be norty and nail cheap carpet grippers to the top of the fence all the way round as their almost guarenteed to stop climbers in their tracks for obvious reasons!

it says a cockerel and 12 hens were stolen from land in Birchfield Road, Redditch, I think there are allotments there so I guess thats where they were but still worrying as we are quite close, it also says they smashed through a gate and cut through barbed wire, they must of really wanted them but its awful I wont sleep for worrying about ours, will have to tell hubby he has no choice on the light, although don't quite know who we can get to wire it up for us, like the idea of the carpet grippers but can't see the cats would be very happy, hehe. You can't access our garden from the side you have to go through the garage its just very dark outside the back as the path isn't lighted, just have to hope they will be ok, we have left all sorts out in the garden and never had a problem but if people hear the chooks thats what I am worried about!

I can understand you being worried but I would be very careful as the carpet grippers would cause some very nasty injuries to any animals who happened to jump on top of the fence.

I'd be inclined to go down the PIR route first and possibly cheap CCTV cameras. You can get them for about £40 now.

Yeah I think we will go for the light and we do have a cctv camera which hubby bought on a whim, we used it when Joshua moved into his own room (first time parents hehe) I might see if hubby can get that set up too, even if we dont have it working it might be worth putting it up anyway

That's a good idea. Ex hubby bought one when we had a new Subaru Impreza and he was scared someone was going to steal it. It was never connected to the video but we could look at it on one of the tv channels if we heard anything when we were inside the house.

I think they work just as well as a deterrent without even being switched on. Just make sure you put it high enough to stop anyone from smashing it should they get into the garden. We had the angle of ours moved frequently at halloween. Yours should be ok though as it will be in the back garden.

Good luck. I can understand you being worried - I'd be exactly the same. It makes you so much more aware when you've got them yourself.
