Poorly rabbit

Recommended Posts

My YS's rabbit AJ had a bit of a limp last week so we took him to the vets. After a check over concluding there were no broken bones he suggested that it might be a sprained leg (AJ lives in a two storey hutch, perhaps he has fallen down the ladder).

He was given two injections and we were told to bring him back if he doesn't improve. Tonight it almost seems like he keeps losing feeling in the bottom of his back and it twists over and he falls over. Then he rights himself and manages to hop and walk normally. I'm very worried and am going to take him to the vets tomorrow. I think it has to be more than a sprain. Anyone have any ideas? He has lost a bit of weight recently. We've just changed him on to supafood on the vets suggestion. We are off on holiday on Thursday and I dread leaving him to my older children (20 and 17 year old - they're caring but not sure they are up for any big decisions that might be needed).

He does not appear to be in any pain.

I'm afraid we had to have AJ put to sleep on 21st August. He actually had a parasite (Encephalitis something or other) it gets passed on from the infected urine of other rabbits. Seeing as he was a lone rabbit it was passed on from his infected mother and stayed in his system until something set it off. He went quickly from limping to not being able to move his back/legs properly and on the last night was not able to move at all. I had never heard of this before. We will not be getting any more rabbits. Poor AJ was only 3 years old.

Hi there,

i've been googling most of the morning until i found this site..

i have a little bunny, named Buddie he had a similar limp last week and i took him to my vet i was told there was no sign of any broken bones an was perhaps a sprain thereafter he went back to normal hopping around his garden.

Monday of this week however i spotted a balding patch on his back and what looked to be a small wound, after taking him to the vet again we were told its an infection, the pocket of infection was burst and i think this has released some pressure around that area for him as he's even more active now, however our vet is rather negative towards his future - i think the infection is spreding even with his antibiotics as another bald patch has appeared this morning.

The little guy doesn't seem to be in any pain, he's eating as normal scooting around his garden and my question is really what should i do?

i think i have 2 options, one being take him to be put to sleep as the infection may run through his entire little body, or for however long he has left leave him be in his familiar surroundings and let nature take its course (to an extent- i would never let him suffer, as soon as he shows any sign of unhappiness or pain i would take him to his vet)

i've never kept rabbit's before so i'm a newbie, so any help would be wonderfull..

Thank you, x

Hi becca

I'm sorry you have a problem with your bunny as well. Do you know where he got the wound from? I'm not sure if its the same problem as AJ had.

If he is happy and eating and not in pain then I would wait and see. Obviously if it gets any worse you will have to take him back to the vets. He might drink more if the infection is getting worse. I hope he is ok. Let me know.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I don't actually know how the sore came about, the best way i can describe it and im sorry if its on the gory side it seems like the infection has gathered so much under his skin that its almost like a spot about to burst. and i guess thats what the vet did was burst it.

Its too badly infected to heal up and he's only a little guy i doubt he'll be able to fight it off, still debating with myself what to do. If i take him to the vet he'll be put to sleep, if i leave him to pass on in his own time am i being cruel?
