mrsm_jones
Aaarrgh! I have just found silkie chick on the floor of the run with her leg bent the other way round! I picked her up and she also has a wound on her neck but the muscle hasn't been injured, and her abdomen under her wings are distended with either fluid or air. I haven't witnessed any of the other chickens or chicks picking on this chick (10 weeks old) before. Could they have just done this damage in one day, or is something else to blame! Most of all....is she curable. Vet thinks not
Egluntyne
Oh dear. What a shame If the vet is not hopeful then it doesn't sound too good. Was she in with older chickens?
mrsm_jones
Yes, she was in with the older chickens and the other chicks, all together. Prob my fault then but they all got on so well until today! NO bullying at all. NOt even sure it is due to bullying yet, what with the broken leg and everything... The Dogmother
Depends on how old she is - generally speaking, smallsters shouldn't be in with the big hens until they're at least 14 weeks old. Hens do enough damage to other adult chooks, let alone babies. I don't know what state she's in without seeing for myself, but from your description, it may be kinder to have her put down
WitchHazel
So sorry to hear about silkie chick. It doesn't sound very hopeful.
