I currently have a good layer of bark/wood chips in my eglu run (direct on the ground) but I'm getting fed up of how muddy it's all getting. I've already tried improving the drainage and so the next option is slabbing/ground cover of some kind.

 

I've just seen 'grass mesh' and wondered if this would be any good for putting on top of the mud with the wood chips on top - what do you reckon? It would definitely stabalise the ground but my only concern is that the chooks claws might get caught.

I'm not really too keen on slabbing as I'd prefer a non-so-permanent solution. Any other ideas??

It might injure the chickens feet if they catch a toe nail in the mesh whilst scratching.

The mesh on the website looks a bit thin....

 

The council have just put in a "grass" car park in the field opposite my house. The used green plastic tiles which look similar to the "Gridforce" ones shown on that website but I think a little deeper.

 

They were about an inch and a half deep holes in ridgid plastic and they filled them with earth and then grass seed. So the car park looks like grass but is stable to walk on. It would mean the chooks can't scratch up the earth though. But if you did that you could dump loads of bark or Auboise on top I suppose. I'll try and remember to take a pic of it later.

Thanks for the info, that does look like exactly what I'm looking for but from what I've seen so far it's quite expensive. Might just end up with slabs.

 

The really annoying thing is that we had an overflow car park at work made of exactly the same stuff. When they came to tarmac it earlier this hear they ripped up hundreds of those things and chucked them all out. Doh!!!
