Patridge bantam chicken poorly foot?

I changed the wood chips in the run for the first time yesterday and noticed the earth under the chips was quite smelly (they have been down about 6 weeks). Any advise welcome, thanks

Why not prinkle a bit of garden lime (not builders) and it will freshen it up.

 

Dig it in a bit.

 

It won't harm the hens as it is just made from pulverised limestone or chalk so is just calcium.

I use garden lime, as Egluntine suggests, and also Stalosan F. Keeping your run dry will also help (not easy in this "summer" we're having .

Thank you both for your replies. I will invest in some lime and Stalosan F. I like the wood chip with earth under as I feel it is more natural for them underfoot, but you can't really 'poo pick' in the evening as they have kicked it all around!
