Hens sitting vs hens standing - help?

Recommended Posts

My Fenning Cou Cou (speckledy/maran hybrid) is spending a lot of time sitting down. She is quite dozy and just drifts off to sleep and sits down in the run. My other hens wander round and peck all day. Is my Cou Cou lazy, ill, or does she just fancy sitting down?

She hasn't got the hang of perches in the evening either. The others all troop off to bed and pick a perch. She just sits on the wood chippings in the coop.

They are all POL, but looking at them, only the Fenning Black (Plymouth Rock hybrid) is really full and red in terms of comb and probably closest to laying. The Mendlesham Blue is getting there, and the Fenning Sussex and Cou Cou don't look developed or red enough in comb and wattle, so I'm guessing this is sitting, not squatting in prep for lay.

Any ideas on the sitting? Is it 'ok', or is this not ideal behaviour?

Thanks

You haven't had the long so maybe she is still a bit stressed by the move.

Mine all powernap during the day.

If she is much younger than her flatmates, she may need to sleep more.

All you can do is observe her and ensure that she is eating and drinking.

Some hens do prefer not to perch at night.

Perhaps if you place her on the perches at night, she will cotton on. :D

A friend of mine thinks she is just dozy. She is first up the run then just sits in the pophole hole at bedtime! The others have to flap and squawk past her. I will keep an eye on her. Speaking of eyes she does have a tiny red scratch near her eye. Could it be a scratch or eczema or something? It's tiny and not bothering her.
