2009 Omlet cube and run for sale

I was rather suprised on Saturday to find 5 eggs in the nesting box, as I only have 4 chickens! I had 4 eggs on Friday which I had removed, and was rather amazed to find 5 on Saturday afternoon.

 

2 of the eggs were a lot paler and smaller than the others and I'm pretty sure that Doris had laid them. I'm assuming that she may have laid one of them in the early morning and the 2nd later that afternoon?

 

We had 4 again on Sunday, so it doesn't seem she is taking a break after such exertion.

 

I've only had them for 3 months - has this happened to anyone else? Should I be worried?

 

Doris is an absolute dustbin and will eat anything and everything that looks remotely edible, so perhaps she over did it on the food front and put her system into overdrive?

 

Interested to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Well, I had not heard of a 2-egg day before, but last week I had 3 eggs and a softie in one day.

 

Hens are strange and marvellous things!

My Ruby did that too! She'd laid for 50 days in a row (I keep a chart ) and had a day off, for the next 2 days she laid 2 eggs! One was a softie but the others had a rough, sandpapery shell. After that she's been back to laying one a day.

My Barney has had a couple of 2 egg days. She's laid one in the morning and then her second around 5pm.

When I had just 8 hens, we had a few 9 egg days. It does happen.

when we lived in Ireland we had 6 ex batteries from a neighbouring farm which closed down

 

all 6 laid 2 eggs each every day - even the dogs were eating them!

we couldn't even give them away because everyone had their own chooks

 

I think some breeds are just made that way
