Lewis
I've hatched 4 Japanese Quail chicks, in my home made incubator. I'm really pleased!!! Have a look at my blog for more information and info about everything, and a video of one hatching They are 1 day early, but it's not too bad a thing. Lewis
Thanks, I'm really pleased that it worked, and as they were a day early, I'm hoping for more tomorrow.
Lewis
We're up to 5 now There was one waiting when I got home from school. I have tried to help one out of its shell after over 24 hours, but I think its stuck to the shell too much.
The Dogmother
Try dampening it with a bit of water - sounds like it might have dried out.
Lewis
Thanks claret I'll try it. Humidity is reading about 46% at the moment, but I'll try dampening it with warm water. I'll let you know. UPDATE: Still no joy after dampening the shell.
Lewis
I tried again with dampening the door, and got the shell off, and the umbilical cord was still attached to the shell. About an hour and a half later, he died I wasn't too shocked and was expecting it to die after not hatching yesterday, but it wasn't nice, and is still a loss of a chick
The Dogmother
Sorry to hear that, but if you've only lost one chick then it's good going really. It's a real dilemma whether to help them out of the egg or not. It's taking a risk, but more often than not it's worth it.

Lewis
My friend Lottie had a study full of them at Easter Is she on here too? (Dilly) I know who you mean, she put me in contact with another quail forum, which is really good!
The Dogmother
Yes, that's her, she had an enormous box brooder full of little balls of fluff. We scooped up handfuls of them to cuddle. Phil managed to bliss one out by lying it on its back and stroking its tummy.
