The egg and the missing chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I've had my two chickens Dizzy (after Dizzy Rascal the rap singer) and Maynard (after Bristol City Footballer Nicky Maynard) for 4 weeks now. I had moved the football out of the nesting box last week (they were inclined to sleep in there are first) and filled it with nesting material in expectation.

Then, yesterday, I went to shut the Eglu for the night and noticedthat te nesting material had been sprayed around - and there was my very first egg! Small, brown and perfectly formed! I was so excited! As I went to check on the chicks, I found that only Maynard was there. It was 8pm and her bedtime in this awful weather. It was chucking it down, so I put on wellies and coat, got a torch and went hunting for her. She was nowhere to be found. I tucked up Maynard and had to call it a night for the search.

I tossed and turned, imagined foxes chewing her up and hardly slept 3 hours.

In the morning, I didn't have the stomach to cook my litte egg for breakfast. I got a cup of tea and sat in the porch watching Maynard - a lonely figur pecking about on her own. Then I heard a great rumpuss from under the Elder tree. Dizzy was wet and bedraggled and squarking loudly and came running up to greet me. I was so happy to see her! I couldn't believe how attached I had becometo them.

I went in happily and had boiled egg for breakfast.

My first chicken adventure. No doubt, many more to come.....

Do any of you have party chickens that stay out all night?
