Rabbit not good :( (Long!)

Recommended Posts

Mystique, my black Rex doesn't really like being picked up, she likes being stroked when she is on the floor. She gets stressed out easily if I pick her up, so I try and avoid picking her up unless necessary.

Well, I noticed her claws needed clipping, so decided to do it today when I got home from work.

I went to pick her up, and felt something just under her side....

omg, she has a massive lump covered in hair, and a bald patch above the lump, with sores, a very swollen nipple, and a deep hole (that looks like a tube), with puss coming out of it :(

I cleaned it up with boiled/cooled sea salt water to get a better look, then phoned a vet straight away.

I didn't phone mine, as I know they are closed on a Saturday afternoon/evening, so I phoned the vet I used to go to.

I asked if they were open on Sat evenings, and she said yes, between 7 and 7:30, only for emergencies, and it's £30 consultation fee, plus treatment etc.

She asked what the problem was, so I told her, and she agreed, it was an emergency.

She then asked if I was registered there, I said not anymore, but I used to be.

She said are you registered at another vets? I said yes, but this rabbit hasn't been to that vets.

She said as I was registered at another vets, they wouldn't see me, as emergency is for 'clients' only!!!!!!!

She was very snotty, and said "it's like a GP's surgery, you can't just be ill and decide to go anywhere". (actually, you can go to another GP surgery if it's an emergency - i've done it myself!)

I said yes, but my own vet is closed on a Saturday at this time, and she was once again snotty, and told me "ALL vets are open 24 hours, they have an emergency line"

I then told her yes, but the vets I am reg'd at charge £90 callout fee - PLUS treatment, which at this time I just don't have, and my rabbit needs medical attention!

I've been online and checked all surgerys within driving distance....no others were open this evening, but there is one about 1/2 mile away which is open tomorrow at 9am - I will have to phone and see if you need an appointment - and this time, I will say NO if they ask if I am reg'd at another vets.

If they are full, I will have to wait until Monday morning, and go to work late.

I really doubt there is much they can do for her, and I am punishing myself for not noticing it sooner (she was last picked up about 2 months ago) :(

She must be in pain, and I always thoughts vets cared about animals - obviously not that one :(

I remember now why I left that vets now to go to another :(

Really sorry to hear about your rex, I hope she's still alive and well, rabbits can go down hill quickly and I know what affect that can have on you too. Don't feel quilty about not spotting the lump sooner. You're right not to pick up Mystique if she doesn't like it.

We had to use the emergency vet for our late rabbit Penny, that was £75 plus consultancy + meds on top. Vets do know how to charge but what can you do? I guess we accept the expense when we get the animal. Mine are all insured so that I don't have to worry. I am surprised at the attitude your vet showed, I just hope that when you get to the vet on Monday they can make Mystique well again. Abscesses are normally fairly simple to treat (although you may have the unpleasant task of having to squeeze it daily!)

Hope all goes well.

Thanks.

Totally agree with accepting the expense....I normally would pay it, but down to my last pennies at the moment....

Going through a divorce, and the ex left me with all the animals to pay for - don't get me wrong, I love them all, it's just hard work :(

Mystique will be coming to work in the morning, and we'll go to the vets across from work - you don't need an appointment, and they don't care if you are reg'd elsewhere.

Mys was happily eating her veg today with Leon (her boyfriend).

Will keep you updated.

The vet said either a tumour, or a deep abcess - whatever it was filled with thick puss and blood - she said whatever it was it's attached deep.

They could have operated, but there was only a small chance the operation would be a success.

There was a bigger chance they couldn't get all of it out, so she would suffer anyway.

I could have left her how she was and kept an eye on it, but it was nearly touching the floor, and it was an open wound - so it was kinder to put her to sleep.

I rescued her, so she had a good 'retirement' with me.
