Most good stationery/photo places do T shirt transfer printing stuff (they had them in Wilkinsons when I looked yesterday) and you can get the stuff either to go on dark or light coloured backgrounds - then you can print off a photo and I think you then iron them on? I haven't tried this method but years ago I used a fancy paint on product which pulled the dye out of the paper and then you rubbed the paper off the back of this "stuff" and applied it to the T shirt - it was really good and washed well too!!
