yannovitch
hello, i am getting quite worried as one of my chooks hasn't laid an egg for some time now, when she normally is quite a good layer, and never had any problem before... she chickens about as normal and everything... the only other symptom is some sort of dusty white sort of dried poo residu on her feathers around her vent... has anyone come accross that before? please help thanks, Yann
chucknette
Hi Yann Have you wormed her lately? I found with one of my hens that she had worms and one of her symptoms was the white powdery substance around her vent. This disappeared after worming and she started to lay again. Needles to say, that if I see a hen with white around her knickers I think WORMS Although this is the time of year for moulting so it could be a combination of the two. ( no eggs) Let us know how you get on. Best wishes
Egluntyne
I agree. A course of Flubenvet would be a good idea.
Christian
The white pasty stuff could be the uric acid (urine) trying to get through if she is blocked up, by a large egg or possibly fluid. It could also be worms. See if you can feel her under carriage and see if she is swollen at all. It is quite obvious if there is fluid build up. If she is fine in herself then I wouldn't worry too much, as long as she is eating and drinking. Return trips to the nest box would indicate egg bound, sitting hunched would indicate fluid build up. Hope she lays for you soon.
yannovitch
thank you all very much for your advice. i have used the DE product to worm them recently, but the bottle i have is about a year old... so i'll get the fluvenbet thing you mentionned if it is moulting, then, it would be their first time, and i don't know at all how it takes place... she hasn't lost any feathers yet anyway... merci beaucoup!
