Single hen

Hi folks,

Haven't been on here for a while but am hoping someone out there can help with recommendations for what to feed a sick chicken.

 

Basically Scarlet hasn't been that well since March. We took her to the vet this evening thinking they'd want to put her down, but the vet agreed that so long as she has quality of life we should let her carry on. She has a problem with her digestion (probably due to cancerous ovaries) and so isn't digesting any food very well. However she still seems to like eating, though not her layers pellets. Can anyone recommend food which would give her the right energy and nutrients but maybe be appetising and easy to digest. I don't want to fill her full of raisins if that isn't the best thing for her!

Poor Scarlet Would she be ok with pellets made into a porrage? Maybe with some bio-yoghurt to help her digestion?

or perhaps you could give some layers mash if you can get a small enough bag?

 

Bio yoghurt is not a bad thing - some defrosted sweetcorn - chopped up cherry tomatoes?

Anything to tempt her. Layers mash, pellet or mash porridge, a bit of Avipro, some Battles Poultry Tonic in her drinking water.

Sorry to about your poorly girl . Would chick crumb be good? High in protein, I think.

When my was poorly she used to love brown bread broken up and soaked in water with a drizzle of honey on top......

Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

 

Sadly Scarlett died on Monday. She is now buried at the bottom of the garden under some spring bulbs. We are more traumatised than the other hens, who don't seem to have noticed. She'll be sadly missed as she was a very nice and patient chicken.
