Single hen

Morning - I would like to get a couple more girls after the death of one recently but the question is this - Should I do it now as the nights are getting longer or wait until the spring?

 

I put a cockerel in with my girls months ago and they didnt like it one bit although I did it at night and had had his run near theirs for a few days etc etc but they pecked all his bum feathers out so I had to seperate them again, I dont want this to happen again so excuse my nervousness!!!

Hi - I don't think the time of year will make much difference. Its just a case of taking it slowly (as you know!) and letting them become used to each other before finally putting them together.

Hi Hannah, there is an excellent thread in the FAQ section about introducing new hens.

 

It is always easier in the winter as they are more subdued, but you will always need additional housing.
