Has anyone heard of this?

Recommended Posts

My dentist sent me to the hospital to check out some white patches on my tongue. He told me not to worry, so of course I spent several weeks worrying!

The consultant thinks it is probably something called 'Lichen Planus' but is sending me for a biopsy just to be sure.

Does anyone else have any experience of this?

Thanks

Sorry, I've never heard of it either.

Did they tell you any more about it at the time? Have just googled and it seems like it's restricted to the skin/mouth and is not really serious - i.e. it doens't lead to anything else other than a rash which can be itchy etc, but also says in some cases oral cases have no symptoms other than appearance of it.

Anyhow, try not to worry (easy to say, I know!)!

Yes, my friend has it in her mouth. A biopsy will confirm diagnosis, it is one of those things that just appears, for reasons unknown, hangs around for many months and then often disappears. Treatment is just to ease any symptoms via either mouth washes or medication. It is nothing to worry about, you cannot pass it to others and it isn't usually a sign of anything more serious. Sorry that is not more positive, but it is not completely negative either :?

I've got this and it was my dentist who spotted it too. It makes my gums sore sometimes and i have to be careful not to overbrush in the sore bits but otherwise it hasn't been a problem.

good luck with it!
